winner Brig-Gen Than Tin (Retd)
Brig-Gen Than Tin (Retd) was born
of father U Tun Hla and mother Daw Ma Ma Gyi in 1924. Among four siblings, he
was the eldest son. He learned secondary education at ABM Middle School. While
pursuing education at high school level at RCM High School and National High
School in Gyobingauk, he joined Burma Independence Army (BIA) to fight against
the British colonialists in 1942.
After that, he continued his soldier life by joining Burma Defence Army (BDA),
and attended the First Intake of Officers Training Course in Mingaladon.
After the Resistance, he took the
duties as military leader of Thayet District People’s Voluntary Force.
Afterwards, he reorganized the People’s Voluntary Organization. Then, he
rejoined the Tatmadaw as ordinary soldier.
In 1949, he attended the No 2
Intake of Officers Training Course in Maymyo (PyinOoLwin).
While discharging duties of
Commander of Eastern Command in 1969, he wiped out the branch of the BCP
(Central) at Intaw-Kyaukgu Camp under Operation Pankyon.
In 1975, he was assigned as
Deputy Minister and then Minister at the Ministry of Mines. In 1979, he was
promoted as Brigadier-General. In 1988, he discharged the duties of Deputy Prime
Minister of the State.
Brig-Gen Than Tin (Retd) compiled
his experiences in his first publication, and won the National Literary Award in
political genre. At present, he writes memoirs in civil affairs. Now, he lives
at No 34, Pinlon Yeikmon, Kyee-pwaryay Ward, Thin-gangyun Township.
