U Nyan Thin wins National Literary Award in Knowledge (Ordinary Science) Genre

U Nyan Thin emerged the winner of the National Literary Award (2004) in Knowledge (Ordinary Science) Genre with his work “Myanmar Ruby and Sapphire”. He said, “That’s the second time I’ve won the national literary award. I won the national literary award for the first time with the book ‘Myanmar Jade’ in knowledge (Ordinary science) genre”. He said that he had to write the prize-winning work (the second) for about four years through theoretical and practical experience with three purposes — to enable the gem miners to know and systematically apply geological facts in mining precious stones; for the students majoring in geology to gain international level study on gems; and for gems merchants to catch up with the international level in fixing standards, qualities and prices of gems.

He was born of U Ba Khin and Daw Pan Thu in Nyaungkan Village, Budalin Township, on 3 March 1935. He completed primary education in Nyaungkan Village, and pursued high school education in Monywa. He passed matriculation exam in 1953. He got B.Sc degree from Mandalay College, M.Sc degree from Yangon University, and Diploma in Gems from London Gems Association. He served for Yangon, Mandalay and Mawlamyine universities from 1957 to 1993. He retired as the pro-rector from Yangon University.
